Creating your character

This section will answer the following questions and also go over the different races/classes offered on AoD and the alternatives of having a dual/multi-classed character.

Creating your character

What should I choose as my name?

Your chosen character name, should be nothing offensive, between 3-11 characters, no spaces, no numbers, no symbols, no ASCII characters and preferably be something that is fantasy based. If the name you want is taken, you will be told and given the chance to select again. Some people prefer to choose unusual fantasy names, others prefer more straightforward names. Most people don't use their real names as the emphasis on AoD medieval fantasy. If you choose a name which is offensive we will ask you to change it, or your character will just be removed without warning depending on how bad the name is. If you are unsure if your name will be offensive you might just want to choose another name. Simply put, choose a name that you feel comfortable with and that will work well in a medieval fantasy environment. If you just want to look around, type 'guest' when it asks for a name. If you like the game and want to play for real, you can then log back on as a proper character.

What Makes a Good Password?

A good password is one that is not easily "guessable". Your password must be at least 5 characters long and we suggest using a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.

Some examples of good passwords are:

peEEp7
B7.Nog
I8tHai

There are six simple rules for passwords:
  1. Never use a word or a phrase or a character name or your name or your girl/boyfriend/dog's name or any other name, word or phrase that someone that knows you might guess.
  2. Always write down your password and put it in a safe place where no one will find it.
  3. Never use the same password for your MUD character(s) that you use for your Internet account.
  4. Never use the same password on different MUDs.
  5. Never give out your password regardless of who the person is.
  6. When you create your character, it will ask you for an email address. It is not mandatory to give an email address, however listing an email address will give you a way to prove who you are incase you ever should lose your password.

An important note: If, for any reason, you lose your password, you're out of luck. It is your responsibility to keep your password safe, make sure you write it down and or memorize it. In all seriousness, if you lose your password the only way you can get it back is by proving, beyond ALL doubt, that you are you. If you have proof, then mail an Arch with your story. If you don't have concrete proof to prove you are that character, don't even bother mailing anyone, you will not get it back.

Your password is a very important part of your character it is your job to keep it safe and secure. In the case that a 'friend', 'roommate' or 'hacker' takes control of your player character and then kills it, makes it go PK, suicides it, or causes it to do actions causing demotion or other punishment, we refuse to undo the actions for any reason other than a provable violation by a wizard of the character file via edit or patch. Please note that only an Arch wizard can deal with such a problem.

Choosing a gender for your character

After you finish choosing a password for your character you will be asked to choose a gender for your character. Currently the only two choices are male and female. Sometimes people who are male in real life tend to choose to have a female character or females choose to have a male character. To each their own...There are no laws against this on AoD.

Selecting a race and class for your character

This is a very important part of the character creation process. If you have not done so already, you should take a few moments and read up on the available races ( click here to view a list of races ).

At the time that this document was written there are currently 36 available races on AoD. Each race has it's own characteristics and special abilities. For example dark elves have Infravision, angels can fly, faeries regenerate faster Etc. Also all races are good in some areas and not that good in other areas. Your race sets your natural stats and skill modifiers (guilds, magical potions and equipment can affect these too). Some races have a high experience earning rate more and other races less. This depends on how good a race is compared to humans. Angels for example have a low experience rate because they have stats that are superior to humans, whereas a kobold has an excellent experience rate because they have poorer stats. Without making it more complicated than it has to be, the reason for this is so each race is balanced and not superior to any other race. etc.

Keep in mind that there are some restrictions whereas some races are not allowed to join certain guilds. An example of this is that a demon cannot join the paladin guild, or that an angel may not be a death knight. So it would be wise to keep in mind what guild you would like to join when selecting your race and class. Some races work better for certain classes and guilds (e.g.: a Dark Elf Mage), while others are noticeably worse (e.g.: Kender Warrior).

After you select your race, you will be shown a list of the available classes that you may choose for that race. You will only be allowed to choose one class when creating your character, but may chosoe to go dual or multi-classed later on. Dual and multi-classed characters are more complex and can take a longer time to level. It is generally not suggested for inexperienced or new players.

There are four main classes on Ages of Despair, Mage, Priest, Thief and Warrior. You will be asked to select one of more classes during the creation of your character.

If you want to join the druid guild once you log on, do not select thief class because you will only be able to choose guilds that are thief related.

What is Reincarnation and how does it work?

When you choose your race, classes and guilds the only way to undo your actions is through reincarnation. An old necromancer who usually dwells around the cemetery of Loriah is the only known living being who is skillful enough in the unholy rites of reincarnation to be trusted with your soul. Also, be aware of the fact that reincarnating your character is a costly process especially at higher levels, and you will lose your free trains you received when you created your character if your total exp worth exceeds 75000 before you reincarnate. Reincarnation is an excellent alternative to starting a new character or suiciding when you want to try another race, class or guild combonation since you get to keep a large majority of your character's experience. Please note that reincarnation has nothing to do with the character creation process. It is just being mentioned so you understand that once you choose a class/race that you are not stuck with it forever. =)

Final steps of creation

At this point, your character is almost created! You will be asked for your E-mail address and homepage URL if you have one. Both are optional, but listing an email address is wise incase you have problems with your character and need to supply proof of who you are (such as if you lost your password) Congrats at this point your character has been created and you will now enter the world of AoD!
